SBoT Position on Education and Business PDF Print E-mail
In April, the Surrey Board of Trade Director’s passed a position paper, as composed by the SBOT’s Social Policy Team, chaired by Penny Priddy. The paper speaks to why education (both K-12 and post-secondary) is important to business.

This is not simply an ask for money from the government. There isn’t a lot of money in government – and we can’t keep asking the government for just money. We need to have a collaborative approach together with business, educational organizations and government. This is a paper that states that education is important for the future of Surrey and in fact for all businesses in our nation. You can read the position paper here .

BC Exports - Double-Digit Growth This Year and Next PDF Print E-mail
peter_hall_web.jpgAt the Surrey Board of Trade ‘Let’s Talk Exports’ event on May 19th, Export Development Canada's Chief Economist Peter Hall said that British Columbia’s exports will grow at a double-digit pace in both 2010 and 2011 as commodity prices rebound and demand from the U.S. recovers. (see a video of the talk here - 35 min)

“Brighter prospects for British Columbia’s forestry sector are around the corner, thanks the reopening of idled pulp mills and the long-awaited revival of U.S. residential construction activity. This will help to lift overall exports by 14% in 2010 and 13% in 2011,” said Peter Hall. Exports will also benefit from the opening of new gas plays, as well as developments in coal and metal mining, and the continued rapid economic expansion of Emerging Asia, especially China.” The forestry sector accounts for 30 per cent of B.C.’s exports, and EDC expects the sector to see 14 per cent growth in 2010, the first growth in 5 years. EDC expects an additional 13 per cent growth in 2011.
