BUSINESS DIVERSITY & INCLUSION LEADERSHIP IN ACTION: Surrey Board of Trade & the Presidents Group Launch New Accessibility Training Certificate for Business

The Surrey Board of Trade, in partnership with the Presidents Group, is offering a newly developed certificate training program to help employers build their skills and confidence in hiring and managing people with disabilities.

The Creating Accessible Workplaces Certificate is a free 5-part course that can be completed online at your own pace. Each module takes about 30 minutes to complete. Participants will learn the business case for inclusive workplaces, legal requirements, terminology, and common workplace barriers employers can address. Upon completion of the course, employers will receive a certificate and their company can be listed on the accessibleemployers.ca website.

The course includes the following modules:

  • Legal Requirements of an Inclusive Employer
  • Accommodations in the Workplace
  • Elements of Inclusive Workplaces
  • Removing Barriers
  • Knowledge into Action

“Whether you are a business owner who has never hired a person with a disability, or you are a strong diversity and inclusion advocate in an organization, you’ll benefit from this training program,” said Anita Huberman, CEO, Surrey Board of Trade. “Diversity and inclusion are essential parts of any business. By making reasonable accommodations, business owners will find that they can recruit from a new pool of highly skilled workers, which is imperative given the ongoing labour and skills shortage we are facing in Surrey.”

“As Co-chair of the Presidents Group, I’m so pleased that we can provide this valuable training opportunity at no cost to Surrey businesses,” said Robin Silvester, CEO, Port of Vancouver. “At the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, 100 of our staff—nearly 25% of all employees—will complete the Creating an Accessible Workplace Certificate. This training will help to improve our confidence as accessible employers across our executive leadership team, HR team and hiring managers.”
