Surrey Board of Trade Announces 2023 Surrey Environment Award Winners

Surrey, BC – On Friday, September 29th, the Surrey Board of Trade presented three winners with the Surrey Environment and Business Award at the 17th annual event.

The event featured the Surrey Hydrogen Forum with a keynote address by BC’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation Josie Osborne, and a thought-provoking panel discussion with experts from the Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association, FortisBC and Invest Vancouver.

The awards were presented to Surrey Board of Trade members or Surrey-based businesses that have demonstrated exceptional dedication to environmental leadership and/or issues. The award recipients are guided by a sense of respect for the environment and demonstrate this initiative consistently.

This year’s winners are:

Small Business Award – RecycLiCo Battery Materials Inc.

RecycLiCo is a battery materials company specializing in sustainable lithium-ion battery recycling and materials production. RecycLiCo has developed advanced technologies that efficiently recover battery-grade materials from lithium-ion batteries, addressing the global demand for environmentally friendly solutions in energy storage. With minimal processing steps and up to 99% extraction of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese, the patented, closed-loop hydrometallurgical process turns lithium-ion battery waste into battery-grade cathode precursor, lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate for direct integration into the re-manufacturing of new lithium-ion batteries.

Medium Business Award – CTK Bio Canada

CTK Bio Canada is a research, development, and manufacturing cleantech company that produces fully biodegradable plastics. Its fully automated manufacturing facility and state-of-the-art laboratory convert wasted by-products into biodegradable and compostable plastic pellets and other high-value materials designed to break down in all environments. CTK Bio’s Edition resins are polylactic acid-free and made of waste materials designed to break in any environment and can replace traditional plastics.

Large Business Award – Pattison Food Group

The Pattison Food Group has a long track record of environmental leadership and has earned regional, national, and international recognition for these efforts over decades. The use of smart technology designs, and the LED conversion in their stores has reduced their energy consumption by more than 30% in electrical costs yearly, equivalent to powering 34 stores. Refrigeration conversion programs have reduced the environmental impact by more than 50%. In 2022, Pattison Food Group kept tons of waste out of the landfills and waste streams, diverting nearly 19,000 metric tons of cardboard and over 550 metric tons of plastic film and plastic bags via plastic bag collection bins in their stores. In July 2022, the company moved to digital weekly flyers, eliminating approximately 8 million pounds of paper waste yearly. They partnered with Call2Recycle to collect customers’ end-of-life batteries at the stores for recycling and eventually helped divert almost 4.4 million kilograms of batteries from landfills nationally. The Pattison Food Group is a founding member of the Canada Plastics Pact and is working with PAC Global to align with the Golden Design Rules, expanding their ability to use recycled plastics in all their businesses.
