Surrey Charter Will Benefit Surrey’s Economy

The City of Surrey is initiating the development of a Surrey Charter. As Surrey’s population grows to become the largest in BC, surpassing Vancouver, this step is essential to enhance the city’s infrastructure development, economic development and governance.

“The exploration of a Surrey Charter is a visionary step towards creating a competitive business environment that attracts investment and accelerates economic growth to help Surrey achieve the prosperity it needs, faster than ever before,” said Anita Huberman, President & CEO, Surrey Board of Trade. “For the business community, this means a more responsive and supportive environment, fostering growth and innovation.”

A charter city is a city granted special jurisdiction to create a new governance system and enact policy reforms. Charter cities can help improve governance in a limited geographic area by giving local officials authority to implement best legal and administrative practices and commercial regulations.

The City of Surrey currently operates under the Local Government Act and the Community Charter, along with other specific pieces of legislation that govern areas like finance, environment, and building standards.
