The British Columbia Government has released its “What We’ve Heard So Far” report, summarizing the extensive engagements on the new South Asian Cultural Centre and Museum (working title), held with various organizations and communities across the province. The report highlights a strong consensus that the centre should be located in Surrey.
“Surrey stands as the heart of the South Asian community in British Columbia,” said Jasroop Gosal, Interim Spokesperson for the Surrey Board of Trade. “It’s the natural home for this landmark institution, which will not only celebrate South Asian heritage but also serve as a cultural hub for the entire province.”
In June, the Surrey Board of Trade, supported by the BC Government, held a consultation and collected survey responses to gather diverse perspectives from the LGBTQ2SI+, BIPOC, South Asian, and business communities regarding the development and potential of a South Asian heritage museum.
“The museum has the potential to be an economic asset for the entire province. Surrey, home to one of the largest South Asian populations in Canada, is uniquely positioned to host this state-of-the-art facility. The new cultural centre and museum will require a modern, spacious building designed to host large-scale events, exhibitions, and cultural activities, reflecting the vibrant diversity of the South Asian community.”
