The Surrey business community is experiencing unprecedented growth, but energy demand is surpassing supply. To support further economic expansion, immediate steps must be taken to fast-track renewable energy projects and streamline processes across all levels of government.
In April 2024, BC Hydro launched a competitive call for 3,000 gigawatt hours (GWh/y) of clean electricity. Proposals totaling over 9,000 GWh/y have been received. However, Surrey’s business community is concerned that these projects will take too long to come online, hindering growth.
“We urge the provincial, federal, and municipal governments to work together and expedite these projects by cutting red tape,” said Jasroop Gosal, Interim Spokesperson, Surrey Board of Trade. “Our businesses need energy now. Delays in approvals will directly impact Surrey’s economic momentum. It’s essential that the process is streamlined to target projects that can be delivered quickly.”
BC Hydro’s upcoming investments of over $36 billion, including renewable energy development and infrastructure upgrades, will help address Surrey’s growing energy needs. However, more immediate action is needed to ensure reliable energy supply for business growth.
To accelerate these projects, the Surrey Board of Trade, on behalf of the business community, calls for a multi-government collaboration that will fast-track approvals, align regulatory processes, and ensure infrastructure is delivered efficiently.
The Surrey Board of Trade invites the business community and stakeholders to join their Renewable Energy Forum, hosted at the Surrey Environment and Business Awards on Tuesday, September 24. Registration is available at businessinsurrey.com. The event will feature an engaging panel discussion on renewable energy. Industry experts will explore the latest trends, challenges, and opportunities in renewable energy, offering insights into how businesses can adapt and thrive in a rapidly evolving energy landscape.
