The Surrey Board of Trade applauds the Government of Canada and the Government of Yukon for announcing funding initiatives to address Arctic security and infrastructure gaps, as detailed in their recent joint statement. This critical investment demonstrates a much-needed focus on Canada’s Arctic, a region integral to national security and economic development.
“The Arctic is a cornerstone of Canada’s sovereignty and an untapped economic powerhouse,” said Jasroop Gosal, Interim Spokesperson for the Surrey Board of Trade. “We are encouraged by this announcement, which aligns with our longstanding call for strategic investments in the Arctic to ensure security, economic development, and connectivity to the rest of Canada.”
The funding will be directed toward enhancing Arctic security, advancing infrastructure projects, and addressing critical gaps that hinder the region’s development. Investments in transportation, communications, and energy infrastructure are vital for integrating the Arctic into Canada’s economic landscape.
For years, SBOT has championed the need for robust investments in the Arctic to unlock its economic potential and fortify Canada’s sovereignty. With climate change accelerating geopolitical competition and altering economic opportunities in the North, this region requires immediate attention and sustainable development strategies.
“The Arctic is not just a remote region—it is a vital component of Canada’s identity and economic future. A stronger Arctic strengthens all of Canada, including businesses in Metro Vancouver, which stand to benefit from improved trade routes and economic opportunities.”
The Surrey Board of Trade urges the Federal Government to continue prioritizing Arctic development by collaborating with Indigenous communities, fostering innovation, and ensuring sustainable practices. Investments in education, workforce development, and infrastructure must remain at the forefront of this strategy.
