SBOT Supports Federal Push to End Canada Post Strike but is Disappointed with the Delayed Response as Surrey Businesses Struggle with Postal Disruptions

The Surrey Board of Trade (SBOT) supports the Federal Government’s actions to end the strike by 55,000 Canada Post workers. Prolonged postal disruptions are hurting Surrey’s businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises, which rely on timely deliveries and payments to stay competitive.

“This strike has caused major challenges for Surrey’s businesses and non-profits that rely on postal services for shipping, billing, customer communications and donations,” said Jasroop Gosal, Interim Spokesperson for SBOT. “While we recognize the importance of labour negotiations, these disruptions disproportionately affect small and medium-sized enterprises, limiting their ability to compete and grow. We are disappointed it has taken so long for the Government to act, especially given the holiday season where consumer spending is at an all-time high.”

Federal Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon announced today that the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has been asked to order Canada Post employees back to work. The Minister also established an industrial inquiry commission to explore long-term solutions for a new contract agreement, with findings expected by May 22.

“This strike is more than just a labour issue—it’s an economic one,” Gosal added. “While we respect the importance of labour rights, disruptions like these harm businesses across Canada by delaying shipments, increasing costs, and disrupting supply chains.”

The Surrey Board of Trade remains committed to advocating for solutions that balance labour fairness with economic stability and ensure the resilience of businesses in Surrey and across the province.
