The Surrey Board of Trade (SBOT) and South Surrey & White Rock Chamber of Commerce (SSWRC) are deeply concerned about the financial pressures facing Surrey Schools, as outlined in the Surrey Board of Education’s latest budget update. The persistent underfunding of capital projects and operational expenses is a growing threat to the region’s economic future, workforce development, and business competitiveness.
“With over 300 portables in use, an escalating budget shortfall, and a growing student population, the current funding model is failing Surrey and White Rock students,” said Jasroop Gosal, Interim Spokesperson and Policy & Research Manager at the Surrey Board of Trade. “A strong education system is critical for attracting and retaining businesses, ensuring a skilled workforce, and fostering economic growth. The Provincial Government must provide immediate, sustainable funding solutions.”
The amended 2024-25 budget now sits at $1.159 billion, but ongoing enrolment growth, inflation, and insufficient grants have depleted accumulated surplus funds, leaving the district with a projected $900,000 shortfall. The financial strain threatens the district’s ability to maintain adequate instructional spaces, staffing levels, and infrastructure investments.
The Surrey Board of Trade and South Surrey & White Rock Chamber of Commerce support the Surrey Board of Education’s efforts to secure more capital funding from the province. As the largest school district in BC, Surrey and White Rock’s education system requires long-term, stable investments to eliminate portable classrooms, reduce overcrowding, and explore innovative solutions like hybrid learning and year-round schooling.
“This is not just a school board issue—it’s a business issue,” added Gosal. “If we do not address these funding challenges now, Surrey’s ability to develop a strong workforce, attract new employers, and sustain economic growth will be severely impacted.”
The Surrey Board of Trade and South Surrey & White Rock Chamber of Commerce urge the Provincial Government to prioritize education funding in the upcoming budget and work collaboratively with local leaders to ensure that Surrey students receive the resources they need to thrive.
